At first, I was wondering why I waited so long to read this book. Who am I kidding? My own assumptions of what the book entailed had me putting it off. The book was absolutely nothing like I had assumed.I am not a fan of BDSM. For some reason, I had assumed this would have a heavy BDSM presence. But it didn't. And the pieces of it did have not only fit the story and characters, but it was done completely with taste. If only other authors took Godwin's example of how to weave something so personal and "taboo" into a romantic, yet haunting story, I might read more of them.Then there was the student-teacher theme. I always cringe. I have read some that were done well and tastefully, others not so much. I am leery of picking up these books because I never know what I will get. This one is not only tastefully done, but it is done perfectly. Godwin kept Ivory's innocence and maturity at the perfect balance. Every side of Ivory worked and was so realistic. Emeric was no different. She held his character from start to finish. I instantly fell for both characters, student and teacher and all.This book isn't just about a forbidden romance. It's about growth and learning to heal and let go. I was enthralled with this book from start to finish. I couldn't stop reading it. I didn't want to stop reading it. Page after page, I couldn't wait for more. Needless to say, there was no skimming scenes or covering my eyes in this one. I relished every last word in this book. So this book is about a very unlucky girl who is surrounded by nefarious people, including her teacher who uses her unfortunate situation to mold her into exactly what he wants out of life. It’s basically a sexual predator’s handbook.Not a single situation in this book is believable, romantic, sexy… or even legal. I’m frankly a little disturbed that so many people find this story acceptable. It’s not the age difference or even the teacher/student aspect that make this so, very wrong. It is the fact that Ivory is a CHILD (she acts like a child, she talks like a child, Emeric treats her like a child) and she is extremely vulnerable. Everyone in the book knows she needs help, not help climaxing or a new car SMH, but real psychological help to become a fully functioning woman after being abused, assaulted, and manipulated by just about every soul in he life. No one… NO ONE gets her the help she needs. Even one old guy who was thrown in and allegedly “takes care of her”, repeatedly turns a blind eye and lets HER take care of HIM. Uh, come on people, this is a child in need.The problem is, this “alpha”/ ”dominant” trend is getting out of control. It’s being thrown into books by too many authors who have no understanding of it. The result is situations that are dangerous and abusive. If you’re into BDSM or forbidden romance, I recommend The Original Sinners series by Tiffany Reisz. It really demonstrates how the number one goal of a dom/sbub relationship is protecting your partner at all costs and doing what’s best for them. That was not the case by either party in this book.
